Patching the Pasture

Last fall’s mild weather allowed our cows to stay outside much longer than usual (into mid-November) but that took its toll on the pasture we were feeding them in. We’ve been working this spring to repair and reseed the heavily used area where the cows ate silage from hay rings. We first [...]

November on the farm

Well, the days are getting colder.  Soon we will have to “tie up” but we are trying to keep the cows out as long as the weather permits.  After the record snowfall on October 22nd, we’ve had many decent days with temps in the forties and occasionally even in the fifties.  There’s not much grass [...]

Lots of feed for the winter months

I was headed to the barn with coffee this afternoon and took a moment to snap a pic of our haylage bales.   What a lot of work that group of bales represents!   They are stacked two high.   We are feeding them in hay rings outside for now.  When its gets colder, we’ll unroll them in [...]

Our farm, on Google Earth

I was exploring my daughter’s MLTI* Macbook tonight and enjoyed playing around with Google Earth. Neat program! I entered an address and “flew” right to an aerial view of our farm. (See screenshot, below.) It’s pretty neat to be able to see our place from above. I wish [...]

Busy month haying

August has been an extremely busy month haying.  The wet weather of June and July has changed and we have had many days of cloudless blue skies.  It hasn’t been easy, but we’ve finished haying!  We baled about 11,000  square bales this year and about 1,100 round silage bales.  We also did about 150 dry [...]

Good weather in the forecast…

… means more haying on the Chase Farm!  It looks like we will have good weather Monday-Wednesday this week, so we’re cutting today in hopes of getting some square bales.  We’ll be calling the crew to let them know we should be haying tomorrow afternoon, as soon as the hay is dry enough to bale.  [...]

July 15 & 16 On the Farm

More photos from July 15 & 16 are available

Another 124 round bales!

We had a few days off from haying due to some showery weather but on July 15 we were able to get some more hay – 124 round bales.     While haying we enjoyed the view from some of the highest ground on our farm.  I took several other photos during the course of [...]
